What is Reiki

Reiki therapy works with energy to release blockages and allow universal energy to bring realignment. You could say it is like acupuncture but without the needles.

Reiki is not attached to any religion or dogma. All it requires is an openness to receive it and having a clear vessel to channel it through. When performing a reiki healing, a therapist will often ask that energy flow through them for the highest good of the person receiving it.

While reiki is an ancient practice, the form we most use came from Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. He taught around 2 000 people his reiki method and those he trained went on to spread the technique.

This webpage explores energy and its impact on us. Most people would agree that our thoughts and feelings have an effect on our physical health. Some of us would go further and hold that our energetic state interacts with our wellbeing - physically, emotionally & psychologically.

Energy Healing

One way to understand energy healing is through a concept offered by energy healer Dr David R Hawkins. He wrote a book called Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior.

It is based on kinetics. He argues that our physical body knows the difference between power (which is positive) and force (which is negative). Take the example of Gandhi’s non-violent resistance (power). It overcame the might of British colonialism (force).

Hawkins scored different attitudes and emotional states as reflecting a level of consciousness. He regarded anything under a score of 200 as being damaging. This includes prolonged states such as grief, anger, fear, guilt, shame or apathy. He believes that only around 15% of people consistently maintain a state of consciousness above 200.

Hawkins found that dogs calibrate higher than 200 (emanating states like acceptance, love, joy, peace). This may explain our feeling better around them. If his view is correct, then it means that less than 1 in 6 people radiate a healthy positivity.

Power is consistent and long lasting. Force is sharp and creates a counter-force which is exhausting over time.

The score of 1000 is the highest level of consciousness attainable. Reiki is a tool that channels this pure consciousness. It can help us let go of debilitating attitudes and emotional states. By connecting more to the higher levels we can meet states like peace and happiness.

When reiki revealed itself to Mikao Usui he became convinced of the supremacy of power (higher consciousness) vs force (human consciousness). This form of energy healing continues to grow in its influence and benefit to humankind.

Reiki Healer

A reiki practitioner typically studies under a reiki master. They learn the reiki symbols during a reiki course. Alternatively, the practice is often imparted through one on one mentoring.

My initiation into reiki began 15 years ago. In undergoing reiki attunements and training in degrees 1, 2 & 3, I attained teacher’s level competency. Combining training and study leads to becoming a reiki master. I offer reiki in Sydney and also do energy healing from my Blue Mountains wellness centre.

I regularly practice reiki treatment. Doing meditation and breathwork also helps me maintain sensitivity to working with energy.

One lady wrote about her experience of receiving reiki for the first time. She speaks of having an energetic experience while trying to understand it from the rational mind. You can read it here:

What the heck happened to my body during reiki?

Seichim (pronounced say-keem) comes from the Egyptian word “sekhem” which means ‘the power of powers.’

This energy healing originated in Egypt. One aspect of it is very feminine and nurturing, helping us develop inner sight. There is also a powerful, or awakening element to it. This serves to help us awaken to our higher purpose and take greater responsibility for our life’s direction.

Seichim is also channelled through a practitioner out of their hands and into a client’s body or over the chakra areas in their energy field.

I have studied seichim, in addition to reiki. The energy healing I offer is a blend of masculine (reiki) and feminine (seichim). It gives you both healing and a renewed desire to express your gifts with their world and become more empowered.

The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence. - Nikola Tesla

Eastern cultures have long believed that we have an energetic body.

The Hindu Scriptures are thousands of years ago. They describe chakras, which translate as wheels of energy. Energy flows through these centres in our body. The 7 major chakras feed into the minor chakras in the same way streams feed into a river. In total there are 114 chakras.

Focusing on what we can see and touch, the West has taken an overly rational approach to understanding the human body. When we do study it scientifically we learn that our brain and heart is run by electrical impulses. Our brains have around 100 billion biological wires that conduct electrical impulses.

Scientist Werner Heisenberg once said, “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.” Heisenberg went on to become the father of quantum physics, which is the strain of science that regards everything as energy.

The rise of ancient cultures, spiritual traditions and the cutting edge fields of modern science, is moving our culture back to the realisation that we have an energy body. For those who enjoy hard science you might like this article.

Reiki and seichim work to clear energy blockages. They also strengthen and amplify the connection between our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual body. A car with 3 functioning wheels and 1 flat one isn’t going to operate very efficiently. So too does our energetic body need to be regularly aligned.

Natural Healing

Growing up in a highly rationalistic western culture has made it hard for many people to accept that we have an energetic body and not just a physical one.

Philosopher, Alain de botton speaks about how stunted our development has become from an overabundance of mental development at the expense of emotional growth:

“Our energies are overwhelmingly directed toward material, scientific, and technical subjects and away from psychological and emotional ones. Much anxiety surrounds the question of how good the next generation will be at math; very little around their abilities at marriage or kindness. We devote inordinate hours to learning about tectonic plates and cloud formations, and relatively few fathoming shame and rage.

We are as clever with our machines and technologies as we are simple-minded in the management of our emotions. We have the technology of an advanced civilization balancing precariously on an emotional base that has not developed much since we dwelt in caves.”

The same could be said about our spiritual development and by association, our disconnection from our energetic body.

Fortunately, there is a growing willingness in many people to explore forms of therapy, or rebalancing. Here is just a small list of some energy healing practices one can experience:

Energy Healing - A brief explanation of different modalities

energy healing acupuncture

Acupuncture has been performed for over 2000 years. It's an ancient Chinese medicine technique. Fine needles are inserted into acupuncture points along the body’s meridan points (or energy pathways). This serves to release energy blocks and stimulate a health flow of energy, or Qi (pronounced Chi).

Music therapy is used in many ways. It can restore the memory of dementia patients, and is utilised as a sub-speciality of palliative care. Studies have shown that different musical vibrations can cultivate or inhibit the growth of plants.

Sound healing is another form of energy healing. It includes forms such as singing bowl therapy used in Tibetan culture. Tuning fork therapy delivers specific vibrations to differing parts of the body. It is like acupuncture, but uses sound frequencies to stimulate energy flow and clearing.

Massage Therapy

Shiatsu attributes health conditions and disorders to imbalances in the energy flow of the body. A practitioner will use massage therapy to apply pressure to areas of the body to correct imbalances.

Kahuna is another form of touch therapy. The name come from the Hawaiian words: hu (masculine energy) and na (feminine energy.) This massage style aims to bring both into balance.

The above modalities are just a few of the numerous techniques we can harness for energy healing and to restore balance and wellbeing.

Reiki Blue Mountains

reiki blue mountains

"If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” - Nikola Tesla.

The Blue Mountains is a sanctuary for people living in Sydney. Hosts of tourists also relish the clean, crisp air. Taking in our local lookouts and bushwalks is to be soothed by the principle known as forest bathing.

Indigenous people have long regarded the mineral waters and pools such as those found in the Jenolan Caves as providing physical and spiritual healing.

Drawn to the high vibrational energy of Katoomba I built a yurt which takes in the surrounding trees to provide an idyllic space for reiki healing. It is also close to the spectacular Minnehaha waterfall.

Reiki Healing - what a session involves

reiki penrith

“A true healer helps you to remember and reconnect consciously with your inner light.” – Robert Holden

I find that to be an effective reiki healer requires that I tune in to what areas you need to work on.

Usually we have a brief chat to find out what is active in your life or it may simply require looking at your aura and the chakra points that need attention.

I’ll then get you to lie down on my reiki table. There is nothing you need to do. As your realignment takes place I play some reiki music which can assist you in relaxing and becoming present. There are times when I will also do reiki with crystals.

The reiki treatment doesn't any physical touch, unlike massage and some other forms of energy healing.

I place my hands lightly on or above specific areas of the body as well as use different hand shapes to express the reiki symbols. In doing so, a transfer of energy takes place. During this time, my hands get warm and tingling which confirms the healing is taking place. When I feel the heat, or energy, in my hands has dissipated, I then place them over a different area of the body.

Breathwork can feel more confronting or purging, but reiki is a gentle method of healing that leaves one with a greater sense of calm and wellbeing.

The reiki sessions are held in my yurt. It is a quiet, specifically designed spiritual healing space that overlooks a bushland area in Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains.

Reiki Symbols

reiki symbols

Reiki symbols have their basis in words from the Japanese language and also some Sanskrit.

A Reiki healer will either use their intention or their hands to pass the symbols over the body to stimulate the flow of energy.

Following their intuition allows the reiki master to utilise the symbols where they will be most powerful.

For example, the symbol at the top left of this diagram is sei hei ki which represents harmony. It assists with emotional and mental calm, helping with conditions like depression, trauma or anxiety.

The symbol in the middle row, on the left hand side, is cho ku rei, that of power. Like a coil, it can be used to increase or subdue energy flow as is needed. Someone may have a block around their third chakra. This energy channel characters our motivation and desire to pursue our dreams. This symbol can help someone refocus on their goals or be used to help someone struggling with scattering their energy on too many passions.
